The current church dates from the sixteenth century and is marked by the influence of the Renaissance,as the island was then Venetian. This influence is visible in the architecture that mixes Romanesque and Baroqueelements.
The Fortezza is the Venetian fortress of Rethymnon. The giant Fortezza, with its hidden centuries of history, is visible from every corner of the town and offers panoramic views of Rethymnon and the coast to the west.
The Old Venetian Harbour dates to the 13th century & was an important trade port for the Venetians and later the Turks. There is a beautiful old lighthouse at the entrance. In the evening there is a wonderful atmosphere from numerous tavernas and cafes.

Take a leisurely cruise along the beach road towards Rethymnon old town. On one side is a 4km unbroken stretch of wonderful sandy beach. Stop a while and join the sun worshippers to top up your tan and then travel a little further to the myriad of coffee shops, tavernas and gift stores along the way.
If solitude is more you thing, then jump on your scooter and head a few kilometres away from Rethymnon towards Stavromenos. There are dozens of secluded beaches where you can kick back in peace and enjoy some private sun time or marvel at the spectacular sunsets on offer later in the evenings.
